Compress an image for LinkedIn

LinkedIn has a fixed set of shapes — a wide profile banner, a square-ish post image, a circular profile photo — and it crops to them whatever you upload. Sizing to those shapes first avoids the two classic results: a banner with your logo cut in half, and a post that looks soft because it was scaled up.

Size it for the slot, then compress

  1. Pick the slotBanner 1584 × 396, post image 1200 × 627, profile photo 400 × 400. Those are the aspect ratios LinkedIn displays; anything else gets cropped by the layout.
  2. Keep text away from the edgesThe banner is cropped differently on mobile and desktop, so leave a safe margin around anything that must stay visible.
  3. Compress to a few hundred KBQuality 85 in JPEG is plenty for a feed image. A 1584-pixel banner usually lands around 200–400 KB, which uploads quickly even on a phone connection.

Why banners look blurry after upload

LinkedIn serves the banner at up to 1584 pixels wide, but it also recompresses. If your source was 1200 pixels and already compressed, the app is scaling up a soft image and then compressing it again. Starting at 1584 with a clean encode avoids both steps.

Post images and documents

A single image post is displayed at roughly 1200 pixels wide. A PDF carousel keeps its pages closer to the original resolution, which makes it the better format for slides with small text — and a good reason not to squeeze those pages to a thumbnail’s file size.

Questions

What is the LinkedIn banner size?

1584 × 396 pixels. The visible crop differs between desktop and mobile, so keep important content away from the edges.

Does LinkedIn compress images?

Yes, every uploaded image is recompressed and served in several sizes. Starting from a correctly sized file gives it less to work with.

Why is my profile photo blurry?

Most likely the source was smaller than 400 × 400 and got scaled up. Upload at 400 pixels square, centred, and let the circular crop do the rest.
