Convert WebP to PNG
PNG is the format every editor, printer and upload form accepts. Converting a WebP to PNG trades file size for compatibility: the picture is preserved exactly as the browser decoded it, transparency included, and nothing is uploaded.
Convert WebP to PNG in three steps
- Drop the WebPThe browser’s own decoder reads the file, including lossless WebP, lossy WebP and the first frame of an animated one.
- Pick PNG on the rightThe PNG encoder (OxiPNG) is lossless, so the pixels you see in the preview are the pixels you get. Keep it on the defaults unless you also want palette reduction.
- Download and expect a bigger filePNG is much less efficient than WebP, typically two to four times larger for photographs. Use it when compatibility matters, not for the final web asset.
Why the PNG will be larger
WebP compresses far better than PNG. A 180 KB WebP photograph lands around 500 KB–1 MB as PNG, because PNG stores lossless pixels with a deflate stream instead of a perceptual model. If the source is a lossy WebP, you also cannot recover the detail that was already discarded.
When converting back makes sense
You need to edit the image in software that cannot open WebP, you are uploading to a form that only accepts PNG or JPEG, or you want to re-save with transparency into a workflow that expects PNG. In every other case, keeping the WebP is the better engineering choice.
What to expect
| Source | PNG output | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| WebP, lossy photo | 2–4× larger | Pixels fixed at the decoded quality |
| WebP, lossless screenshot | 1.2–1.6× larger | Pixel-identical round trip |
| WebP with transparency | kept | Alpha channel preserved |
| Animated WebP | first frame only | PNG is a still format |
Questions
Does converting to PNG restore quality?
No. Decoding a lossy WebP gives you the pixels it contains; re-saving them as PNG is lossless from that point on, but the earlier compression is not undone.
Will transparency survive?
Yes. PNG has a full alpha channel, and the preview renders it as a checkerboard so you can confirm before downloading.
Is my file uploaded during conversion?
No. Decoding and encoding both run as WebAssembly in this tab, and the network panel stays quiet while the conversion happens.
