In-browser image optimizer
Compress a screenshot
A screenshot is mostly flat colour and sharp edges — the exact content lossy codecs ruin. The right move is lossless PNG optimisation first, then palette reduction if it is still too heavy, and WebP lossless if you can rely on modern browsers.
Compress a screenshot in three steps
- Paste it straight inScreenshots are usually on the clipboard, so press ⌘V (or Ctrl+V) on the page instead of saving a file first.
- Optimise losslessly, then reduce the paletteOxiPNG rewrites the same pixels with a tighter stream. If that is not enough, enable Reduce palette: user interfaces use few colours, so the saving is large and the text stays sharp.
- Check the text at 100%Look at small labels and thin lines in the preview. Banding and coloured fringes mean you pushed quality or the palette too far.
Why JPEG ruins screenshots
JPEG throws away high-frequency detail, and text is almost entirely high-frequency detail. At any quality low enough to be worth the trouble, labels smear and edges pick up coloured halos. PNG and WebP lossless keep the pixels exact, which is why the file is bigger — and why it still looks like a screenshot.
How big should a screenshot be?
Shrink it before sharing: a 2880-pixel retina capture displayed in a 900-pixel documentation column is three times more pixels than anyone sees. Resizing to the display width first often halves the file before any encoding trick.
What to expect
| Approach | Text quality | Typical saving |
|---|---|---|
| OxiPNG (lossless) | identical | 10–40% |
| Reduce palette | identical for flat UI | 50–80% |
| WebP lossless | identical | 20–35% vs PNG |
| WebP lossy at 80 | soft edges on text | 70–85% |
| AVIF at 50 | visible on small text | 80–90% |
For screenshots shared as documentation, stop after palette reduction. The lossy rows are for thumbnails, not for anything someone has to read.
Questions
Why is my screenshot so large?
Retina captures are two to three times the displayed size, and PNG stores every pixel losslessly. Resize to the width it will actually be shown at, then optimise.
Does palette reduction blur text?
No — it limits the number of colours, not the shapes. Text stays sharp as long as the palette covers the anti-aliasing shades, which is why it works well on interfaces and badly on photos.
Can I remove sensitive information first?
Not here — this tool compresses, it does not redact. Crop or black out anything private in an editor before the file ever leaves your machine.
